2008 Newsletter

Thank you for your interest in all-natural, local food from Old Paths Farm. We hope this spring newsletter finds you all doing well, and eager to help reclaim real food for ourselves and our families. This year's newsletter follows a slightly enhanced format, which we hope will be an improvement over the long-winded letters of the past. For the benefit of those who are new to the farm/website, we will try to include previous years' newsletters on this sight soon, giving more background on who we are, what we do, etc. For now, enjoy your visit here, and let us know if you have any questions or need more information!

Remember, orders fill very quickly on most items. SEND IN YOUR ORDER NOW!! Send us an e-mail or give us a call to order product. Thanks!

PASTURED POULTRY

This is our eleventh year offering these healthy, delicious birds. We get day-old chicks, brood them in cozy safety for three weeks, then send them out to fresh pasture for the rest of their lives. We process them here on the farm at 7 1/2 weeks old, and you pick up whole, chilled birds any time after 2:00 PM on processing days. Supplies are very limited, so get your orders in soon. Price remains the same, at $2.25/lb. Average weight is 3.5-4 lbs.

2008 Processing Dates

May 17th

June 14th

July 12th

August 16th

NOTE: We have offered cut-up, vacuum-sealed chicken in the past, and you have all raved over it. We expect to do that again soon, but we are waiting for a new facility to open nearer us, as the old facility was too far away to be economically viable for us and low-stress on the birds. Hopefully, by next year we'll have all the boneless, skinless breast you can eat!

LAYING HENS AND EGGS

We usually have plenty of hens that keep us over-supplied with eggs, plus extra hens to sell to all of you who want to start your own backyard flock. The past year, however, has been very tight, hen-wise, leaving us with few eggs to sell, and no extra hens.

The gentleman we always get our young pullets from expects to have more ready in June, and we look to get plenty new hens then. When we do, we'll let you know, and you can start getting all the eggs you want!

SALAD BAR BEEF

Do you ever wonder where your meat comes from, and what it's been doing all its life before finding its way to your local supermarket? Well, we invite you to come lounge in green pastures near your next steak or hamburger, enjoying the beauty and majesty of animals being raised responsibly and humanely in the natural environment God created for them. Our cows are moved daily to fresh pasture, and have a diet of 100% local-species forage (that's grass, for you city folks!). We feed no grain, and give no antibiotics or hormones. Our beef is heart healthy, and has a taste that is unmatched anywhere.

As we've said elsewhere, supplies of beef are EXTREMELY limited; most bulk orders will be grabbed up by our long-standing, loyal customers. But, go ahead and place an order and we'll do our best. Of course, you can usually get individual cuts of beef year-round--just call first!

We will do some spring calves this year, but most will be processed in the late fall (ready around the middle of December or so). Bulk orders are by the half or whole, and the price is same as last year--$3.00/lb. whole or $3.25/lb. half, based on the carcass hanging weight. Remember, actual take home weight will be 25-30% less due to boning, trimming, etc. If you want us to save any "unusual" parts, let us know ahead of time, as the butcher may discard some items before we contact you to find out what cuts you want.

Thanks for helping us re-introduce real food raised by real people.

We appreciate each one of you, and hope to see you at the farm soon.

PASTURED PORK

There is nothing quite so fun as watching pigs root around looking for yummy things to eat and sunning lazily in an open field. Our pigs truly live in "hog heaven" here on the farm. They also work hard to help us convert overgrown, wasted areas into lush pasture and keep the woodlots clear. All that hogwash you may have heard about pigs being full of parasites and cannibalizing one another doesn't happen when they live in such luxury as they enjoy out in nature.

Pork is processed just like beef, except we have much better supplies of pork. We still need to know soon what you want, in order to secure enough baby piglets to be ready for fall processing. There will be no spring bulk pork, but individual cuts are available year-round.

Price is the same as last year--$3.00/lb. for a whole and $3.25/lb. for a half.

PASTURED TURKEY

We are very excited, after a year sabbatical, to offer Thanksgiving turkey again. As so many of you can attest, there is simply nothing better than having one of these delightful birds to share with friends and family around the table in late November. We will only raise about 50 turkeys, so get your orders in soon, and don't forget to get an extra one for the freezer for Christmas.

Turkeys usually weigh in at around 12-16 pounds, and the price is $2.75/ lb.

MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS

Though supplies aren't consistent, we do sometimes have extra vegetables from the garden. And Stacy still makes delicious, fresh breads and other baked goods upon request. Just let us know what you're interested in.

If you don't see something here you're interested in, just let us know. We are open to adding new enterprises to meet your needs, and value the input of our wonderful customers.
