2010 Spring Newsletter
Thank you all for coming to our website. We hope this newsletter, though brief, will answer your questions regarding availability from the farm this year, and give friends old and new a look into all that is happening at Old Paths Farm. We are off to a good start already, with chickens, cows, pigs and lambs all out enjoying fresh spring grass and all the other joys of a clean, healthy environment. We welcome each of you to come spend a day at the farm. Bring a picnic and sit by the pond or out in the pasture next to the sheep, or call ahead of time to arrange a quick tour for your family. Brave souls can even come help process chickens on those days!
We look forward to hearing from you. As always, call or email with questions or comments, or to place an order. We'll see you soon!

Chicken We have four processing dates planned for chicken this year. The first batch is already out of the brooder house, and in the field eating delicious grass, bugs and our custom-mixed, drug-free feed. We encourage you to order your birds well in advance of the processing date, as we will likely run out pretty quickly. The processing dates for this year are May 22 July 17 October 9 October 30 As always, we ask that you come out in the afternoon to pick up your whole fresh birds. We will not be offering any vacuum-sealed parts this year, so make plans to come on out on processing days. Price is the same as last year.
Pork We have a limited amount of pork this year. It will be ready in late summer, and can be bought in bulk (whole or half) or by individual cut. Our butcher doesn't do any curing, so we don't offer bacon or cured hams. The pigs are out on wood/pasture paddocks that we are trying to "clean up" from weeds and bigger brush, and they do a wonderful job! If you want pork this year, please let us know as soon as you can; we are almost sold out already. Price remains the same as last year.
Turkeys We will be raising turkeys again for Thanksgiving this year. Raised just like the broilers (except they eat a lot more, and get a lot bigger), these birds will be the highlight of your Thanksgiving meal. Order two, and save one for Christmas. Our margin on turkeys is really small, so price is increasing this year by 25 cents to $3.25/lb. Average weight is 10-14 pounds. Please get your order in by June 1st to make sure we will have a turkey for you. Processing will be November 20th. |
Beef If all goes well (the rain keeps falling, the grass keeps growing, and the calves keep getting bigger), we should have plenty of beef available for purchase in the fall. "Fall" for us sometimes spills over into January, but we hope to have the beef ready in November this year. A lot depends on the butcher's schedule. Beef is all grass-fed only, and is naturally very lean and good for you. You can buy in bulk by the half or whole, or get individual cuts as they are available here at the farm. Average hanging weight is 300-400 lbs., and take home weight is about 30-35% less than that. Payment is on the hanging weight, and price remains the same as last year.
Lamb Lamb is a brand new enterprise for us this year, and honestly, we don't know what to expect regarding availability. The very first lambs ever born at Old Paths Farm are now about a month old, and they are such a joy to watch! If you're interested in lamb, send us an email or call. When we know the prices and have lamb ready for purchase, we'll post it on the website, and probably send an email, too.
Laying Hens & Eggs We currently have one, yes one, laying hen on the farm! Having to buy eggs for our family is not something we're happy about, but all of our laying hens from last year were either sold or eaten by skunks! We expect to get new layers around the end of May, and when we do, we'll have ready-to-lay pullets available to anyone who wants to start their own backyard flock, and also plenty of eggs. Again, we'll keep you posted! Thanks for your patience. |
| We know this isn't nearly enough information to answer the questions of those of you who are new to Old Paths Farm. We are working on a new website design that will give in-depth information about everything we do, so we've kept this letter as short as possible. Travis is doing the website himself, so don't look for anything fancy, and don't expect it to be up and running anytime soon (we're shooting for this year though!). | |
